Over the years, there have been a number of ICT awards organized in Hong Kong under various titles. Building on past successes and experiences, the Hong Kong ICT Awards was established as a collaborative effort among industry support organizations, ICT professional bodies, academia and the Government to build a large scale and internationally recognized branding of ICT awards of Hong Kong. The Hong Kong ICT Awards aims to recognize, promote and commend the excellent achievements to which Hong Kong ICT professionals and organizations contribute. The Awards also encourages local practitioners to develop innovative and creative ICT solutions, which will uplift the image of Hong Kong ICT sectors, both locally and internationally.

Hong Kong Computer Society ("HKCS") is the organizer of the "Hong Kong ICT Awards 2006: eLearning" (Formerly known as the "IT Excellence Award") with the objectives of recognizing and encouraging better use of information and communication technology to enable effective education and learning activities through more personalized and automated means.

Hong Kong Computer Society ("HKCS") established the "HKCS – IT Excellence Awards" in 1998 to recognize and promote innovative and original design effort by outstanding practitioners in the IT industry in Hong Kong. This annual event has become a great tool to encourage the use of IT, stimulate innovation and competitiveness in the IT industry and raise public awareness of IT application development.

Through the years, the IT Excellence Awards has gained the recognition for its objective professional initiative as well as its brand of excellence in the IT products and service sectors. Since its debut, there have been over 390 local applications participated in this award scheme, of which, 251 came from enterprises including government departments, 108 from SMEs and 33 from post-secondary institutions.

Since 2001, selected winners of the Awards were nominated to participate in the Asia Pacific Information & Communications Technology Awards (APICTA), an annual regional event which aims at stimulating economic and trade relations, technology transfer and business matching opportunities through regional co-operation. All contestants for APICTA have to be nominated by the local government or national computer societies. In Hong Kong the nominating organization is the HKCS. Over the years, entries from Hong Kong have garnered 84 awards in this regional competition and made their marks not only in Hong Kong but also in the international IT scene. Up to now entries from Hong Kong have won more APICTA awards than any other APICTA economies.
