Europe and China
In 2013, Europe and Mainland China have embarked on their initiatives in the identification and transformation to “Smart Cities” clusters in the next few years. The Strategic Implementation Plan was developed by the European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities in October 2013.

Smart City – China…Hong Kong
In late 2013, Smart China (Holdings) Limited was established in Hong Kong. One of the plans is to set up its R&D center outside of Mainland China in Hong Kong in collaboration with CUHK, using Hong Kong as a R&D Hub for Smart City. The idea is to attract Technology Experts from Hong Kong, Mainland and overseas toward the China “Go Global” strategy. It also facilitates the announcement of Chinese authorities (January 2013) in selecting 90 cities as the pilot cities for China’s smart city project with an investment of over US$10 billion in the next 3 years - the “Go Local” strategy.

Smart City – Hong Kong
Hong Kong, in the 1 country 2 systems scheme, is well-positioned to be one of the contributors in this “Smart City” movement. The HKSAR Government has themed its current Digital-21 strategy as “Smarter Hong Kong, Smarter Living”.

HKICC 2014
On its 37th year, the HKICC 2014 has its theme “Smart City – Let IT Go!”. It coincides with the technology trend to create Hong Kong, China and European countries to be “Smarter Cities” in the next 5 years. Hong Kong has the reputation of having a world-class ICT infrastructure, highest global broadband service (97% of household) and mobile penetration rate (237%).

The 5 “Smart City” projects of the Digital-21 strategy consists of: (a) to promote city-wide WiFi capacity to double; (b) to move digital Government data to public consumption; (c) to step towards a paperless Government; (d) to use Big Data Analytics (BDA) to leverage Internet of Things (IoT), sensors and BDA to improve city management; and (e) to use Digital ID for citizens for eHealth, e-cheque, etc.

A “Smart City” uses technology to enable the integration of key resources for its citizens. With an aim to shape the future, the Computer World is organizing a Symposium in November on “One Day in the City in 2020”. This is the time when citizens, businesses, social services, entrepreneurs and researchers can articulate their dreams and put their dreams to reality in the coming future.

HKICC 2014 will be an exciting time to open the conference attendees’ eyes and minds for what is in the “Smart City” of today and tomorrow in the next decade.

Former Director of Computer Centre, The University of Hong Kong (HKU)

The Hong Kong International Computer Conference has been the most prestigious annual IT event in Hong Kong and the neighbouring region for almost four decades. This year, HKICC2014 has adopted an excellent theme “Smart City – Let IT Go!”.Indeed, “Smart City” is no doubt one of the most talked-about topics in the IT world in rcent years.

Hong Kong has benefited from its excellence in a number of areas in the IT arena. However, in the face of the fast-developing pace in China and other neighbouring cities, that competitive advantage is being rapidly eroded. Hong Kong community, including the government, the academics and the indusry, must work hard together to sustain our IT excellence and put our eyes on fostering the new and emerging development of next-generation communication and technologies and applications. It is essential to push the development of Hong Kong as a Smart City of the region to benefit not only those who are tech-savvy but also the general public, including the young and the elderly, in every aspect of daily life.

Coming to its 37th year, the HKICC will provide an excellent platform to bring together ICT professionals to present and share latest technology achievements and business practices on Smart City and ICT. I congratulate the Hong Kong Computer Society and its Organizing and Programme Committees for staging the HKICC2014. I wish HKICC2014 every success.

Vice-President (Administration), City University of Hong Kong

I wish to extend my warmest congratulations to the Hong Kong Computer Society on staging the Hong Kong International Computer Conference 2014 (HKICC2014).

HKICC has been an annual landmark event for sharing achievements and opportunities in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). HKICC2014 will again bring together ICT professionals, industry leaders and business executives locally, from Mainland China and overseas, to exchange ideas and share insights on the latest IT innovations and business practices.

HKICC2014, with its theme, “Smart City – Let IT Go!”, would lead us to explore how IT may be applied creatively to enhance the safety, convenience and facilities in cities and bring better living to urban dwellers. Over the past decades, we have witnessed the great advancement of ICT and the dramatic transformation and improvement it has made to our society. HKICC2014 on “Smart City” would be a significant initiative to bring forth further transformation and enhancement.

I look forward to this inspiring conference and to meeting many ICT movers and shakers. I sincerely wish Hong Kong Computer Society and all conference participants every success in HKICC2014.

HKICC has always been an event that is marked well in advance on the calendar of participants as a “must go” appointment. This year’s theme is most relevant at a time when more and more people in the world move to live in the cities and look for quality living facilitated by modern and innovative means, information technology in particular.
