Founded in 1970, the Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS), with over 8,000 members hail from the entire spectrum of HK’s IT community, is a well-recognised non-profit organization focused on advancing the interests of Hong Kong's IT profession and industry. The Society is committed to the following main goals:
- Talent cultivation and professional development
- Industry development and collaboration
- The effective use of IT in our community
The 25 Members of the HKCS Council, and the Honorary Council Advisers, are recognized leaders from major IT vendors, academic institutions, and major corporations. One of its standing committees, the CIO Board, is composed of CIOs whose IT related procurement accounts for about 70% of all IT spending in HK. To promote IT in Hong Kong, HKCS organizes regular activities including conferences, seminars, workshops and visits on various subjects related to IT.
With Talent Cultivation and Professional Development being our primary goal, the Society persistently encourages our youths to pursue IT-related studies at our tertiary institutions and to take up IT as a career through talks, exhibitions, IT Career toolkit and Portal. Our 7 special interest groups (SIG) (Cloud Computing, Social Media, Mobility, Enterprise Architecture, Business Intelligence and Knowledge Management, Information Security, and Quality Management) disseminate technical and application knowledge of topical interests to in-service professionals through forums and networking activities. The Society is the pioneer in launching IT professional certification in HK, with six certifiable titles, namely three senior titles (Systems Architect, Project Director, Quality Assurance Manager), and three junior titles (Associate Project Manager, Information Security Officer, Business Analyst).
To promote our IT industry, HKCS organizes an annual delegation from HK to compete in APICTA (Asia Pacific ICT Awards). In 2011, HK entries have the record breaking results of 5 Grand Awards and 9 Merits, the best performance ever in the history of APICTA by a participating economy.
