Hong Kong International Computer Conference 2004 Tackles Local Excellence, Global Success in IT
Highlights trends in multimedia, wireless communication technology, information security and RFID and Hong Kong’s prospective role as Asia’s IT hub

HONG Kong, 8 December, 2004 - IT leaders and innovators from Hong Kong and around the world converged today at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center (HKCEC) to showcase their IT prowess and success before a global audience at the Hong Kong International Computer Conference 2004 (HKICC2004), an annual international IT forum organized by the Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS).

Twenty seven years in running, this year’s event drew for about 400 participants around the world for the two day conference, from 8 – 9 December, 2004.

Gracing the event are renowned international and local speakers, who lead the various plenary sessions, panel discussions and breakout sessions centered on four of today’s hottest IT topics - multimedia, wireless communication technology, information security and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).

“Technologies evolve, but people’s response to them remains true to form. With much enthusiasm, we still welcome innovations that promise to impact the way we work, live and play. HKICC2004 lives up to its tradition of highlighting technologies that profoundly affect our lives,” said Dr. Jerry Yu, Chairman of HKICC2004, at the opening of the event, which was held alongside another HKCS-organized event, the Asia Pacific Information and Communications Technology Awards 2004 (APICTA 2004).

HKICC2004 underscored the important role that Hong Kong could play in the promotion of Information and Communications Technology in the region. “Hong Kong is at the heart of the world’s most attractive market, these advantages put it in the driving seat to serve as a key IT hub in the region, “ said Mr. Sunny Lee, President, Hong Kong Computer Society. “We could help expedite beneficial technology exchange and unprecedented cooperation between IT leaders. HKICC and APICTA are excellent examples of these.”

HKICC’s theme for this year is “Local Excellence, Global Success”, chosen to duly recognize Hong Kong’s home-grown companies that have effectively capitalized local talents and IT resources to succeed in the global marketplace.

The event had as guest–of-honor, Mr. John C. Tsang, JP, Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology, Hong Kong SAR Government. In his keynote speech at the HKICC conference proper, Secretary Tsang outlined Hong Kong’s IT achievements as well as future strategies.

Secretary Tsang’s speech was followed by a keynote speech by Mr. Francis Ho, JP, Permanent Secretary for Commerce, Industry & Technology, HKSAR Government and a testimonial by Eric Tai, CEO, Octopus Cards, a local smart card company whose success in the global arena fittingly represents the forum’s theme.

HKICC2004’s programs also include a CEO forum headed by Stephen Lau, Chairman, Electronic Data Systems Corporation. Titled “From Professional to Executive Leadership”, the forum features Paul Chow, JP, Chief Executive, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing; Hubert Ng, CEO, Hong Kong CSL; and Eric Tai, CEO, Octopus Cards.
