From a single and interactive MMIS user interface, library users can enjoy a wide variety of
audio- and video-on-demand services as well as access to a diversity of document imaging materials via 470 LAN and ATM
workstations strategically placed throughout the new Central Library in Causeway Bay. Information is stored in a three-level structure
of servers, jukeboxes and a conventional distribution system with a computer-controlled analogue audio-visual switch.

The MMIS offers the people of Hong Kong richer multimedia content and greater flexibility, vastly
improved and highly specific search capabilities. It is one of the world's largest and most complex Chinese/English digital
library services, and is a key milestone in Hong Kong's "Digital 21" strategy. The MMIS is accessible via the Internet at
home or from the workstations and PCs in the Central Library, making it a vital tool in promoting personal responsibility of one
own lifelong learning.
