Abstract:

Topic: Privacy Rights and Issues in a Smart and Mobile Society

The presentation will outline the privacy risks generated by the unique characteristics of the smart and mobile ecosystem, and discuss the special challenges faced by consumers, device manufacturers, operating system providers, service providers and other stakeholders in protecting privacy.

The findings of an international survey conducted by Hong Kong and 25 other privacy enforcement authorities in May 2014 will be revealed to assess the transparency of privacy policies and practices across some 1200 mobile apps. This will highlight some common concerns regarding availability, findability, contactability, readability and relevance. A few best practices will also be showcased and some general guidance for designing and developing mobile apps will be provided.

The presentation will include the Commissioners enforcement and promotion strategies on protecting privacy in the use of smart devices and mobile apps, and his concluding message that privacy can be a key competitive advantage in business.
