Abstract:

Topic: 'The Korean Approach to Smart City: the Case of Seoul'

This presentation will share Koreas experiences for Smart City. In particular, it will explain why Korea has changed its strategy from u-City to Smart City. Smart City is making a big market with many cities launching their own smart city projects every year. Korea is definitely one of early players, starting u-City initiatives as early as in 2005. However, Korea soon faced critical problems. Sensors, which formed the fundamental basis of u-City, were too expensive and technically underdeveloped to be used. So Seoul changed tack with u-City and set up a new Smart City strategy. New Smart City make the most of existing data so that it can deliver a variety of services to citizen on the ground. Smart Seoul focuses more on building platform for data sharing and usage than on developing intelligent systems based on IoT. In this regards, Smart City could be defined as a City as a Platform enabling citizen to create new services and to do the right things.
