Chairman, Hong Kong Society of Medical Informatics

The Hong Kong Society of Medical Informatics continues to join hands with the Hong Kong Computer Society in promoting the adoption of ICT in healthcare. We have a strong partnership since 1989 and we are indeed very satisfying in witnessing the increasing use of computerization and informatics adoption in healthcare institutions in both the public and private sectors. The promotion of the concept of “one citizen one electronic health record” by the government really helps to push the penetration of IT into all healthcare providers. I am sure in the coming five years, we can achieve this concept with the launch of the Territory wide electronic health records sharing platform by the government next year.

I wish the HKICC 2013 another great success.

Technologies are now not just a driving force that fuels the world's economy and spearheads human progress, but are also an agent that fundamentally transforms the various aspects that businesses (be they commercial, social or personal) are operated and organised. Few industries or societies will remain unchanged by technology innovation, nor will human beings live and interact in the same way amidst technology disruptions, as evidenced in the past decades and projected by experts to the future.

Without doubt, information and communication technologies (ICT) are dominant and prominent among the various technologies that effect transformations to people, businesses and the society. With the myriad opportunities that are brought about, challenges are aplenty, technological or otherwise, when people, businesses and the society strive to turn the opportunities into real benefits in daily lives for the mass.

In this regard, professional societies have a vital and meaningful role to play in bringing together the ICT community, developers and other stakeholders, to address these challenges. Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS) has set an exemplar by actively and continuously contributed to ICT professional development as well as provided an excellent platform such as the Hong Kong International Computer Conference (HKICC) to engage the various parties of the society in fruitful dialogues that address practical challenges faced by all at times of technology disruptions.

On behalf of IEEE Hong Kong Section Computer Chapter, I would like to highly commend HKCS for its organization of such an important event as HKICC for the society. I am sure HKICC will once again achieve great success and endow all participants with a rewarding and enjoyable experience at the conference!
