Introduction

The Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS) is committed to enhancing the professional standing, introducing advanced technology through various events / activities and keeping abreast of the up-to-date market information and this is especially important under the current global financial crisis. Attracting the new blood and re-establishing contact with our former members are both highly valued by the HKCS. With the Membership Drive Campaign in 2008, our membership base keeps expanding and right now we have 7,000 members. Over 50 events were held during the year and we would like to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all members who have attended our events and those who contributed a great deal in arranging the activities.

One of the great initiatives of all these events was the establishment of the HKCS Social Clubs in September 2008 which included the Wine Club, Dining Club, Investment Club and Sports Club. The Social Clubs have provided members with more opportunities to meet with other IT professionals in a friendly atmosphere, so as to expand their personal networks. Moreover, they were also regarded as platforms to explore, share and exchange ideas in a more relaxing way. Various events were successfully organised for the club members in 2008. For example, 3 wine tasting events and a dining event featuring "Giant Grouper Banquet" were held for the Wine Club and Dining Club members respectively. What is more, market practitioners and academia were invited to be the speakers for a series of investment seminars which were organised for the Investment Club members. To raise our members' concern about their physical wellness, we have also organised recreational and sports activities such as the Annual Golf Day which was held on the 30th September at The Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Golf Course at Sai Kung for the Sports Club members.

Student members have long been our focus to nurture future IT professionals. It is with this connection, Youth Club has jointly organised the "HKCS / City University Mentorship Programme" with the Department of Information Systems, City University of Hong Kong (CityU) since September 2008. The collaboration has helped facilitate the educational and professional growth of students through coaching and learning. 14 Chief Information Officer Board (CIOB) members and Senior Managers from large IT Corporations have joined this programme and a series of activities such as the 1st Mentor Mentee Gathering, the 2nd Mentor Mentee Gathering - BBQ and the Seminar / Gathering - Preparation for Internship had been organised since then.

Youth Club has also spent a lot of efforts in conducting career talks at the universities and tertiary education institutions to attract more students to join HKCS as members. Thanks to the assistance of Council Members and SID Chairperson as speakers, we successfully organised 4 career talks at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2008, contributing to more than 200 students joining HKCS as members.

In order to broaden the horizons of HKCS members and provide them with great opportunities to learn the application of IT technology to its full extent, site visits to the Hongkong International Terminals (HIT) and the Hong Kong Broadband Network Limited were also hosted in 2008.

Joint ICT Spring Dinner 2008

The Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS) would like to make acquaintance with the IT professionals, especially with our HKCS members in giving them an opportunity to strengthen their personal networks and share experiences in a relaxed atmosphere. We organised the annual Spring Dinner on the 22nd of February 2008 at Tao Yuan Restaurant, Wanchai with the Hong Kong Information Technology Federation (HKITF), Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association (WTIA) and the Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK) and this exhilarated evening attracted over 300 people to join.

The evening commenced with Mr Sunny W K Lee, President of HKCS and the Chairmen of other co-hosting organisations sharing their views about the outlook of the ICT Industry in Hong Kong. The MCs of the evening were Mr Francis Fong, Vice President of HKITF and Ms Sindy Lau, a famous DJ from RTHK. The event was officiated by the 4 co-hosts placing puzzles featuring the themes of Development, Value-Added, Innovation and Nurture onto the backdrop. Witnessed by the Guest of Honour, Mrs Rita Lau, JP, Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (Communications and Technology), the opening ceremony was kicked off with a sense of unity and under a cheerful atmosphere.

There were a number of games held throughout the evening including a beer drinking competition, an ICT Q&A and the traditional singing competition. Thankfully, the participants all displayed great talent in their chosen events and the games were a great success. The most popular guest of the evening was certainly the "God of Fortune." When he entered the venue, many guests enthusiastically clamoured to take his photo and to receive a "Lai See" directly from him. Thanks to the generosity of various sponsors, guests were happy to receive fabulous prizes in the lucky draw which brought the whole event into a climax.

Before the end of the event, the Organising Committee announced that the net income for the Spring Dinner would be donated to the Hong Kong Red Cross, in order to provide further assistance to our friends on the Mainland.

We would like to thank all those in attendance for making this event a glowing success. This event wouldn't have been possible without the effort of the organising committee or the support of the sponsors.

Hong Kong Computer Society 38th Anniversary Gala Dinner cum HKICC2008 Conference Dinner

The Hong Kong Computer Society 38th Anniversary Gala Dinner cum HKICC2008 Conference Dinner brought over 600 IT professionals, business executives and their friends a jovial night on 26 September 2008 in the Grand Ballroom of JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong. All the participants enjoyed a delightful time.

The evening began with a welcome remark by HKCS President Mr. Sunny Lee commending the Society's continuous effort in the development of the IT industry. The Guest of Honour of the evening, Mr. Duncan Pescod, JP, Permanent Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development (Communications & Technology), the Government of the HKSAR was then invited to deliver a speech to the participants.

The highlight of the evening was the video presentation of the HKITPC and CPIT. HKCS Distinguished Fellow Mrs. Agnes Mak, MH, JP, Director of the Institute for IT Professional Certification assured that the recognition and certification of IT professionals would drive Hong Kong's future.

Another noteworthy programme of the evening was the announcement of the "HKCS Outstanding IT Achiever Award (OITAA)". The Chairperson of the Organising Committee, Ir. Dr. Samson Tam explained the rationale and aims of launching the award. It is believed that professionalism can be elevated with the new professional benchmark in the Hong Kong IT market and Hong Kong's critical role as the international IT city in Asia can then reinforced.

In order to achieve the goal of forging links with the younger generation who are the up-and-coming future of the IT profession, the "HKCS Scholarship" has been established to recognise and encourage the outstanding students in computing study. President Lee presented the scholarships to four university students for their outstanding performance in the 2007/08 academic school year.

We would like to express our gratitude to the Hon. Mr. Bernard Chan, GBS, JP, the Chairperson of the HKICC 2008 Organising Committee (OC), Prof. Ching Pak Chung, Chairperson of HKICC 2008 Programme Committee (PC), Mr Michael Ma, Chairperson of the HKCS Gala Dinner Organising Committee, the OC and PC members for their efforts in organising a dinner thrilled with joyful atmosphere and last but not the least the sponsors for their generosity.Everyone enjoyed the warm atmosphere and socialising time.

HKCS-Gartner's Seminars

The Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS) organised 2 seminars with Gartner, Inc., the world's leading information technology research and advisory company in July and August 2008 respectively at the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC). Based on the theme "Beyond Web 2.0", the first seminar introduced the future of the web, including such topics as cloud computing, software as a service and the mobile web for "3.0". The seminar attracted over 50 participants and they also gained the opportunity to have a close interaction with the speaker, Mr David Mitchell Smith, the Vice President and Gartner Fellow in Gartner Research.

Followed the success of the seminar in July, the HKCS-Gartner's CIO Agenda 2008 Presentation cum CIO Networking / Wine Tasting was held on the 28th of August at the HKPC. We were glad to invite Mr Dave Aron, the Vice President and Research Director in Gartner's CIO Research Group, who was specialised in the topic of IT leadership to be our guest speaker. The seminar was well attended with over 50 participants and many of them held the CIO positions.

The HKCS is now confirming the schedule with Gartner to invite more IT analysts to present seminars exclusively to HKCS members in 2009.

HKCS Christmas Party

This year the HKCS Christmas Party was held at the Hong Kong Computer Society and the Centrepoint of the Hong Kong Productivity Council on the 10th December 2008. There were more than 50 HKCS members including some friends from the media joining the party and they were happy to take this chance to visit the HKCS new office.

With the venue decorated with dazzling Christmas ornaments, participants were in a good mood to chat freely with friends, enjoyed the fine wine or had a bite of the dishes prepared at the cocktail reception. When the party came to and end, Mr Raymond Chu, Vice President (Membership) and other Membership Committees presented the prizes to the lucky draw winners and everybody were happy to enjoy such a good time.

HKCS Annual Ball

The 17th December 2008 was no doubt a big day to all members of the HKCS and it was indeed not surprising to see that ladies and gentlemen in the IT industry were all dressed up for the HKCS Annual Ball which was held at Hotel Nikko Hongkong.

More than 200 IT Professionals including HKCS Executive Committee Members and CIOB Members attended the evening function with their partners as they were well-prepared to enjoy a joyful night and dance until mid-night. The function began with Mr Frederick Wu, Chairperson of the Annual Ball welcomed all the guests. With the great performance of the live band, not to mention the solo-singing of Mr Daniel Lai, BBS, JP Chairperson of the CIO Board, the atmosphere of the Annual Ball was really at the peak.

The sumptuous dinner served could not really retain the guests at the dining area for long. Most participants lingered at the ballroom because they could not only take the chance to mingle with their friends, but most importantly, they could and were eager to dance all night. When the party came to an end, there were programmes of exchanging gifts and lucky draw. With the generosity of the sponsors, prize winners felt content. The 1st prize winner was even thrilled when he received an i-phone from Mr Raymond Chu, Vice President (Membership) & Internal Affairs. Everybody was having a great night at the Annual Ball and they were very impressed by the good organisation of the Hong Kong Computer Society.

We would like to thank all the organising committee of the Annual Ball for their hard work in organising the function their effort was greatly appreciated by all participants.
